The Dunlap Coke Ovens Park is a 77 acre park located in the heart of Sequatchie County, Tennessee. It is maintained by members of the Sequatchie Valley Historical Association. This non-profit organization strives to serve the community by preservation of local history and natural resources. The park operates entirely upon donations from visitors.
What are the Coke Ovens? Coke is a byprouduct of coal, and resembles charcoal. Coke was used to smelt iron ore in the steel foundaries in Chattanooga and Birmingham. The 268 ovens were constructed in the early 1900’s to heat the coal to high temperatures and remove impurities. The Coke Ovens Park is located at the base of Fredonia Mountain, the site of the coal mines. The museum is an exact replica built on the foundation of the company store.
Take time to explore the ruins of a once thriving industrial complex. Meander through the woods and explore an almost forgotten piece of history. Visit the museum where you will find photos and artifacts from the early 1900's. For those who are more ambitious, hike the 3900 foot incline to the top of Fredonia Mountain where you can see magnificent views of the valley while exploring the places where coal mining once thrived.
